MyMassRequest

A standalone app for a mobile-first generation of donors.

Not a mobile version of a website. A native iOS and Android app, on the App Store and Google Play, that reaches younger Catholics where they already are.

The myMassRequest Official App on the App Store: its icon, a 5.0 rating, and the listing’s screenshots of the app’s home screen, card picker, verse picker and card preview.

The problem

A second front door into the same system.

After the new SMA website launched, SMA and Lava saw the next opportunity. The site worked well on a phone, but younger Catholics prefer dedicated apps, and SMA wanted to reach them without leaving its long-time donors behind.

This wasn’t a redesign. It was a second front door into the same system, and it had to feel simple and immediate while obeying every rule the fulfillment system enforces.

What we did

Built for a thumb, not a mouse.

Lava designed and built MyMassRequest as a native app for iOS and Android.

  1. 01A step-by-step Mass request flow built for a thumb, not a mouse.
  2. 02Secure login with Face ID and Touch ID.
  3. 03Card browsing with visual previews, verse selection, and personal messages.
  4. 04Cart, order review, donations, and payment in the app.
  5. 05Full sync with SMA’s back end, so an order placed in the app is the same order in the fulfillment and reporting systems.
  6. 06Privacy and security built to App Store and Google Play requirements.
The work

A Mass request in a few taps.

Two screens from the app, as its App Store listing shows them.
The MyMassRequest app’s home screen: “Hi, Catherine! Welcome to the MyMassRequest App” over a photo of a chalice, with Request a Mass, Enter Novena Intentions, Donate and My Profile buttons. The MyMassRequest app’s Select a Card screen: a grid of Mass card designs, including the Madonna and Child, Christ with a lamb, and birthday cards.
What changed

One operation, not two.

Donors can request a Mass and send a card from their phone in a few taps. Every order lands in the same system as the website’s, so SMA runs one operation, not two.

What made it hard

Every rule, none of the clutter.

Reproducing a rule-heavy request system in a native app without duplicating it. Product logic, scheduling limits, and payment processing all live in one place, and the app had to respect every one of them while staying simple on screen.
