KidsVoice

One site for everyone a child’s case touches.

KidsVoice advocates for children in Allegheny County’s courts. Its site had to serve donors, advocates, guardians, and families at once, without confusing any of them.

The KidsVoice home page Lava built: a smiling young girl and her grandfather under the word “Securing” and a Learn More button, then the heading “KidsVoice Mission.”

The problem

Four audiences that barely overlap.

KidsVoice’s audiences don’t overlap much. A guardian needs a form. A donor wants to give in under a minute. An advocate needs a specific resource. A board member wants to see the mission clearly stated. The old site couldn’t organize its resources for any of them and had no easy path to giving.

What we did

Asked the people who use it.

Before designing anything, Lava surveyed donors, board members, and supporters directly, alongside staff, so the site was built for the people who’d use it.

  1. 01A searchable resource center for guardians, advocates, and stakeholders, with downloadable materials.
  2. 02Online donations that are simple to give and simple for staff to track, including event registrations and sponsorships.
  3. 03An integrated e-newsletter so KidsVoice stays in touch with its supporters.
  4. 04A clean, accessible design that keeps the mission in front of every audience.
The work

Each audience, its own path.

What Lava built, on desktop and phone.
The new KidsVoice home page on desktop: a photo of a smiling girl and her grandfather under the word “Securing,” then the KidsVoice mission statement.
The KidsVoice home page on a phone: the photo hero with its Learn More button and the KidsVoice mission statement.
What changed

A click or two to the right place.

Each audience finds its own path in a click or two, giving happens online, and the design carries the weight of the mission without getting in the way.

What made it hard

Four audiences, one simple site.

Serving four audiences with one simple site. Asking real users what they needed, not just staff, is what made it work.
